 Re: Aplo #3----Sancho
Bird very eager to fly today...just ready to get out there and the storm rolls through. You hate to complain about rain, but couldn't it have held off for another hour??? Always tomorrow.

222g. Wind 10-15mph Sancho seemed eager to hunt today, but just couldn't put birds up. Maybe it was the steady wind, but found very few birds. Came close on some field birds, but he didn't catch anything. On the upside, he spent a fair amount of time on the fist. Didn't call him, just where he wanted to hunt from. Never strayed, but didn't spend very much time in the air either. Perfect manners all around. I enjoyed being with him today.

 Re: Aplo #3----Sancho
sometimes a stress free day, quiet and uneventful is a good way to see how his manners are developing.

 Re: Aplo #3----Sancho
True Carlos. You can tell a lot about the development of a hawk/falconer relationship when the game is slow.
222g. Warm, slight breeze Hunted yesterday with a couple falconers. He wasn't nearly as airial as usual. He started off pretty normal, but we put quite a few birds under him a short time. Looked like he had one just a few minutes into the hunt. After a couple attempts, he hit pretty hard and mantled out. He had that bug eyed look like he was ready to bolt. The other two guys stayed put and let me make in on him. He settled slightly, a took out my lure as usual (a signal that I am not taking food, but bringing it). I dropped it, not expecting much reaction, but he ran right over to it. A split second later that sparrow was flying away and there were feathers scattered on the ground where he was. He has never left a catch for his lure before, so I am left to question if he ever actually had it. I suspect he did, but we will never know. I flew him until he told me he was out of gas. Put in plenty of efforts, crashed plenty of brush, but didn't secure a meal. Called him to his lure, traded him off and teathered him. No sooner did I shut the truck door and a couple hundred Starlings come into the field, not 15yds from us...seriously? That is the nature of the hunt I guess.

 Re: Aplo #3----Sancho
228g. Nice night Grrrrrrr. I ate him. Well, I wanted to anyway. I turned him loose, walked ten yards into the field and it was evident he wasn't going to play. He was almost instantly 60' off the ground and climbing, going away. He crossed into the next field and I saw him stoop on a bird from 70-80' up, chase it around a bit then start to climb again. I took out my lure, but he wasn't interested. Just kept going. I got back in the truck and started going west after him. When I hit the two mile mark, I stopped for a reading....nothing. I circled for the next half an hour, never a peep out of the receiver. I was at a loss, I wasn't sure what to do or what direction to go. I had circled back to the original field again, waiting at a red light, frustrated. I was staring down, wishing the needle to bounce even a little, hoping to hear a peep in the distant background. Only then did I realize I had been driving around with the receiver on the sensitive setting....only good for about 20yds. As soon as I switched it I had a nice loud signal. It took me another half an hour to navigate the neighborhoods and pin point his location. The last I saw him, he was 5-600' off the ground and almost a mile west of me. Picked him up a half mile east of me and 3/4 mile north of me. He did some flying. He was in a developing subdivision. I had a nice solid beep, saw a silhouette on light pole, got out and started whistling and swinging my lure. No response. Great, here we go again. More whistling, swinging, nothing...then something slams my lure sitting on the ground. I look down and there is Sancho. I look back and realize I was looking into the sun at a Coopers hawk. Man, talk about a day that nothing went right!

You found him before the Coop did and.... well... you found him. Kidding aside I'm glad you found him safe and sound.

 Re: Aplo #3----Sancho
I wouldn't put it past him that the reason he went there was because of the Coop. It isn't the first Coop he has chased off!
