Most "apprentices" hold onto them for reference. As sponsors, we usually loan them to our apprentices.
Best bet for a used one is Ebay.

I was going to buy it from western sporting with the manual and they wanted as much as the books cost just to ship it so I thought I'd check around locally

Ebay is a good idea though thanks Gary

Hi Brandon,

I'm learning for my test now to and let me tell ya, David Frank at Western Sporting is a great guy and was very helpful with me. He suggested 3 books, Apprentice Study Guide, Apprentice Manual, both from the California Hawking Club and The Falconers Apprentice by William Oakes. He was right on the mark with his suggestions, all 3 are excellent for the person going for his test. He sent me these 3 books priority mail and I had them in 3 days, much better then a book from e bay that took me 3 weeks to get. My total cost with shipping was only $70.85 of which only $9.00 was for shipping and handling. Believe me when I tell you they are worth every penny. It will be some of the best money you will spend to learn and get passed your test. Just order them.

Best of luck to you...

Steve

I have never seen the second one from CHC. I can attest that the Oakes book is worth it.

Gary,
The Apprenticeship Manual is very helpful. This is what it covers.
Introduction to Falconry.
Chronology.
Sponsor and Apprentice.
Code of Ethics.
Falconry in Practice.
Manning.
Hunting.
Food and Health.
Lessons of an Apprentice.
Recommended Reading.
Training Log.
Weighing and Feeding Log.
This to me appears to be a great starter manual with a lot of information for the beginner and a quick and easy reference if you happen to forget a simple basic. This gave me a pretty good understanding of the basics and saved me from asking a lot of questions sponsors have probably heard over and over again.
The next time we hook up I will bring it with me so you can take a gander at it.

Steve

Give David a call and see what he says. He really is a nice guy and will take care of you, he did for me. Not sure where you live which might make a difference too... I live in Illinois....

Here is the thing, "sponsor and apprentice, ethics, practice, manning, hunting and lessons of an apprentice" are all very subjective things. What I consider to be an acceptable manning practice may be appalling to another falconer. How I hunt really depends on where I am at in the country. I won't even touch on ethics. Point is, all of these things are very subjective. It might contain a lot of information, but it might not be good information. The CHC probably spent a great deal of time putting it together, so I guess I should have some faith in it. :D
